again with the christmas kitsch

matching tins from sal's. i have no will power.

thank you for all of the advent calendar advice and button wreath love. you are an amazing source of information and seem to possess super-human ego-boosting powers. thanks again.

not that you would know from checking out my blog, but i have been crafting like crazy. hopefully i will have some completed projects to show off here soon...

oh yum

russian tea cakes (or as my family aptly calls them...butter balls). i just felt like making cookies today. this is the only time of year i make these and i'm sure i will be making many more between now and christmas. they are by far my favorite christmas cookie recipe. you should share yours, if you feel like it...

thrifts and crafts from christmas' past

Img_0002_13 Buttonwreath
i put just a few festive things out yesterday. i try to ease into the season, so as not to overwhelm john, who can be a bit of a hum-bug but is very forgiving of my over-the-top christmas-y ways. the vintage fake mistletoe is an all-time favorite find of mine, and i was all about making the vintage button wreaths last year. many received them as gifts and my stash was critically depleted of red and green buttons.

and here is another great ornament find from this year. my kids have been fighting over him, but he is mine, mine i tell you!

belated thanksgivings

despite all the bitching and moaning that goes on here, i really consider myself a glass-half-full kind of girl. to demonstrate, here's a list of things i am super thankful for, all the time....

  • kick-ass husband
  • rock-star kids
  • crazy, dysfunctional, but ultimately loving extended family
  • friends who love me for and not in spite of my snarky, antisocial ways
  • everyday luxuries i try not to take for granted: house, electricity, heat, water, car, food, health and health care, telephone, internet, tv, etc....
  • way-cool neighborhood where the kids are like siblings and the grown-ups are friends and you can always find someone who feels like having a beer with you at 5pm when your husband is working late and you are feeling a little melty
  • awesome neighborhood school where the kids are loved and nurtured and the parents feel welcome and needed
  • amazing community of crafty bloggers who made me feel so welcome when i crashed their party and proceeded to copy all their wonderful ideas. like this one, for instance...

my version of the tissue holder. i think they are the perfect little gift for the neighbors this year (if you are reading this and are a neighbor, you will just have to act surprised).

we had a great thanksgiving at the in-laws. glad to be home for a day of puttering (maybe a bit of decorating) before the kids return to school and the holiday season kicks into high gear....

this t-shirt is for jane - so great! i love that tree fabric so much. jane wore it yesterday and i have a feeling she will be wearing it again today. there was also this wonderful vintage fabric for me...

love it. thanks stephanie!

i'm heading out of town today and anxious to get a couple things out the door before i consider myself on vacation. among the packages leaving here today is this suitcase i made for a swap...

it is a soggy, foggy week here in portland. this is the view from my kitchen window. i decided to try and make peace with my dog, yoko  (who thinks her name is "damnit" or worse) and took her for a nice long walk in the foggy cemetery today.

now it is back to cleaning - my girls are coming on friday and i am so excited i could just spit.

tiny happy

i hit a few thrift shops this weekend just as they were putting out their christmas stuff. i sifted though lots of crap and found a few gems...
Img_0004_8
(plus the two boxes of vintage shiny brites behind them)

in other christmas decor news...
i was crestfallen after seeing these, dashing off to target to get my own, and finding they had sold out (waa, waa, waaaaaaaa). my resourceful friend, jen, went in the next day and asked them to check in the back (which i never do anymore because it has never worked). and they had two left! and she gave me one! jen rocks, no?

these are the things making me happy today. that, and both kids at school and nothing on my schedule but crafting.

happy monday!
