some works in progress

Img_0006_8
see? i'm not a total slacker. that case in the back features some awesome illustrations by one of my favorites, alain gree. it is not so easy to find books of his at any sort of reasonable price, but i recently scored a few beat-up old library books on e-bay. i love that the dad in this book has a cigarette or pipe in his mouth in almost every picture....makes me a little nostalgic.

that's all i got today. have a good one!

i heart ruth krauss (and maurice sendak)

Hands
(from a hole is to dig, ruth krauss (ill. by maurice sendak)

these two collaborated on several books including a hole is to dig , i'll be you and you be me, a very special house, and open house for butterflies. she has collaborated w/lots of other great illustrators, including mary blair in i can fly. most are out-of-print but worth tracking down (which is uber-easy w/my convenient amazon links!). she is (was) so quirky and fun and poetic and i love her.

and this might only be funny if you are a librarian, but i enjoyed it.

hope you are having a super-fantastic week!

sweet blog o' mine

sometimes i overuse a phrase or word so much that i start to annoy myself (which is probably 3 weeks past everyone else's saturation point). once, on a school ski trip, my friends and i bonded with a group of canadian girls over our mutual overuse of the snl church lady's "well, isn't that special?" lately, "holy crap!", "wowzers!", and "good lord!" are enjoying overuse...you may have noticed any or all of them in your flickr comments.

high school and early college were all about the "o'" instead of "of"....keg o' budweiser, case o' ramen noodles, dime bag o'.....

and today i'm bringing it back with "blog o' the month". i don't have a list of blog links here (except family + friends). that's because, as jen recently pointed out, the list is embarrassingly long. it would require another page. it's safe to say that if you are reading this now, and you have your own blog, i'm reading it. but i like the idea of showcasing some favorites, as i've seen others do. in fact, stephanie had a link to my blog awhile back and i met lots of fun new bloggers because of that (and i don't think i ever thanked her. thanks, stephanie!).

so this month's (we'll say march, a few days early) blog o' the month is stephanie dosreis' a little deer. stephanie was my first etsy friend. she makes wonderful t-shirts and softies and collages and paintings. she has such a great aesthetic. she is adorable and super talented and sweet and i just love her. so there!

and she actually has some crafting going on over there, unlike this sham of a craft blog*. i should just call it a thrift blog these days. here's some more...

(if you live local, there is more of this at the so po goodwill. at least, there was on saturday)

*in truth, i've been doing lots of crafting - all for orders and swaps. if i owe you something, i promise you i'm working on it!

i'm an aunt!! (for the 15th time)

dorothy mae, fresh out of the oven. wasn't it considerate of her to arrive while two of her favorite aunts were visiting from maine? i thought so.

getting the hell out of dodge

Img_0003_18
i love my cozy house. i am quite the homebody. but right now i am so sick of it i could puke. and we all know there has been more than enough of that around here lately.

so we are headed down to mass today to hang out with my folks, see some siblings, nieces, nephews, maybe even a brand new baby girl if she cooperates and shows her face in the next few days (i know my sister would be most grateful).

i'll be back here monday. hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

view from yesterday

Left Right
Front
that was one nasty stomach bug. i barely got out of bed yesterday. charlie kept me company. we watched a lot of muppets (that's his favorite skit).

feeling muuuuuch better today but a bit beat up. not a whole lot going on so here's a few of my recent favorite flickrs...

brandie's new favorite cup
mia's jump makes me dream of spring
andrea's peter max 7up sign, perfectly worn
abby's breakfast at byways - so yummy in every way
this shot of mcsweeney's issue 11 makes me think i should give dave eggers another chance
and jess's picture of storybooklandhouse makes me think it may indeed be a magical kingdom

see how a good picture can sway opinion?

pukey smurfs

my kids both caught a pukey bug yesterday. it was short-lived, but we are quarantined today and i am waiting for it to hit me. so far, so good.

here's my growing collection of vintage pyrex, fireking, etc. bowls....
Img_0006_7
the flower ones in front are new. i found one a few weeks ago and three others this past weekend. i'd never seen that pattern before and am totally diggin' it.

did you see jen's post about vintage craft books? too funny. i have several myself and love how they can both inspire and amuse. for instance...

fingers are overrated

Flowers
(made by me, age 4? 5? in vacation bible school)

some mornings jen and i never make it to the gym. sometimes we get lattes and stay inside her cozy car w/heated seats and chat. that's what we did this morning. we were talking about weird things we thought were cool when we were little and i remembered this story...

there was this counselor at vacation bible school who only had three fingers (well, two fingers + a thumb) on one of her hands. i was four or five at the time and obviously very interested in her three-fingeredness so i ask her why she only had three fingers and she sarcastically told me "i figured i didn't need the other ones so i had them surgically removed" and i thought "how cool is that?!" and started devising ways i could rid myself of superfluous appendages. luckily i didn't get very far because i think most craft stuff i like requires all your digits.

and i think this might win the prize for "most arbitrary" of my "arbitrary ramblings".

my kids have vacation next week. i have a sister due w/baby #2 any day now so we may head down her way or we may head to vt to visit friends. i'm feeling like getting the hell out of dodge. i'm sure i'll be poking around here regardless.

chat soon...

can't fight the seether

...and i'm wondering how far into the month you can call it "pms". perhaps i'm just a bitch.

anywhooooo...here's a pretty view out my window yesterday
Snowy

and i don't know if you are a jim gaffigan fan, but this video always makes me laugh (even though i've never actually had a hot pocket. perhaps i'm missing out?)

(perhaps i use the word "perhaps" too much. perhaps i need a thesaurus.)

v-day

Rocks
(this picture is from last summer...it is a winter wonderland out the window today)

i like poetry, though i am lazy (as i am about many things in life) about seeking it out. my main sources are garrison keillor's writer's almanac and the occasional poems that show up in the new yorker. once in a while one sticks with me, like this one i heard on the writer's almanac a few weeks back and felt the need to hunt down and share with you...

the past is still there

i've forgotten so much.
what it felt like back then,
what we said to each other.

but sometimes when i'm standing
at the kitchen counter after dinner
and i look out the window at the dark

thinking of nothing,
something swims up.
tonight this:

your laughing into my mouth
as you were trying
to kiss me.

(by deborah garrison, from the second child)

i thought it was sort of valentine-ish. hope you are having a sweet one!
