charles. charlie. chachi (and sometimes "hammer")

Chachi
i don't usually post photos of my kids here, but i just felt like showing off charlie today. he turns six on sunday (april fool's day baby) and i can just hardly believe it (which every mom says at every kid's birthday but it is still so true).

he's having an alien themed birthday - we are celebrating at the planetarium. i'll have some birthday crafts and pics to share on monday. happy weekend, everyone!

2nd grade, 1977

2ndgrade
i'm the one with the bowl cut. oh, do i need to be more specific? i'm the one with the red/white/blue plaid jumper and sensible shoes in the front row.

some favorite things from those days of yore...
escape to witch mountain
leif garrett + shawn cassidy
holly hobbie (resisting the urge to bid on that)
the lonely doll (yes, creepy. and i read that story about the author. even creepier)
baby come back seriously. i love that song.

i was starting to try and organize some pictures. then i found this one and had to share it and now i've just lost momentum. oh well.

again with the buttons

Img_0004
i came home from work last night and needed to unwind a bit before bed. so i made more buttons while sitting in front of the boob-tube.
Img_0003
a bunch of people asked what kind of button maker i have. so i'll tell you. it's an "american button machine" button maker. i got it off ebay...i think i paid $179 for the machine plus enough supplies to make 1,000 buttons (which i have gone through...yikes). anyway, i just did a quick ebay search and they seem to be a little pricier these days.

i use it a bunch...for myself and for the kids (party favors and such). jen* borrowed it last spring for a weekend and immediately found some cool new uses for it (which i promptly copied 'cause that's the kinda girl i am). she got her own pretty quickly. they're wicked fun.

so that's my spiel on buttons. thanks for all the buck-up-little-camper comments yesterday. i am feeling much more chipper today (despite being a total snark at the gym w/jen this morning. sorry jen). this week is just one of those weeks when i wish my kids came with an instruction manual...

have a great day!

*speaking of jen, did you see that she has a brand-spanking-new etsy shop?

button maker, i choose you

Img_0001
how much do i love my button maker? a lot. the perfect fun thing to do when you are too burnt to do anything else.

crappy morning today. feeling like a sub-par parent. i'm sure it will pass.
perkier post tomorrow!

banner mail day at the rooks house

Img_0006 Img_0025
today was cold and rainy and full of errands and work and then more errands (which i hate doing when it's cold and rainy). but then i came home and there were four (!) packages waiting for me on the front porch!

new shoes, which i desperately needed and got a deal on from e-bay.

new glasses, which i desperately needed and got a super good deal on at 39dollarglasses.com! i even took a picture of myself wearing them (and you know i hate pictures + it's really hard to take a picture of yourself which many of you already know) just to show you that they are pretty nice glasses for $39! (ok, mine were $45 w/shipping. but that's frames and lenses...pretty awesomely cheap if you ask me).

a very nice set of hand-me-down red wine glasses from a good friend (they had bad divorce mojo. thank you, terry!)

and some craft supplies. wow! so much good stuff in one day.
hope your week is getting off to an equally cheery start!

(oh. remember when i posted this old greg video a bit ago? john and i have since become completely obsessed with these guys and especially the soup song. terminally catchy. crouton, crouton, crunchy friends in a liquid broth...)

retro kid II

Img_0004 Img_0007
i forgot. jane has some cool vintage stuff in her room, too.

when i was really little and my dad told me he was an engineer, i thought he meant train engineer and always wondered why he wore suits to work and not striped overalls and a cap. then when i was older i realized that he was a chemical engineer (not that i had a clue what that meant) and he worked for avon, which was fun for me because everyone would ask me "what? is he, like, an avon lady?!" (hardy-har-har). anyway, a perk was that he brought home lots of cool junk, like that avon perfume decanter bird house. we used to have all of them, but i think my dad has sold most on e-bay, as they are quite the hot collectible these days. my sister once drank the entire contents out of one of those - that might be the one - i can't remember. and the owl is from a yardsale.

action-packed weekend ahead. tomorrow we are cheering on jane as she takes part in this. then we are rushing back to portland to see don't let the pigeon drive the bus! the musical! good stuff, hopefully. and maybe some dinner with friends. and maybe some housework. good stuff. good stuff.

hope your weekend is full of good stuff, too.

retro kid

Bearfur
this is charlie in one of his favorite shirts. it's a vintage velour v-neck. he tells us it's made of bear fur, camel fur, and blue-jay fur.

being the nostalgic freak that i am, i loooove vintage kids clothes and gobble them up whenever i'm out thrifting. charlie is easy...he will wear anything. jane has much more of an opinion so i don't have much luck with her but i've been snatching up old gunny sax whenever i see them hoping she'll like them when they fit her.

anyway, i bring all this up because my good friend, angelique, has started a flickr group called lucky duck where you can flaunt all your fabulous retro kid stuff. and not just clothes - toys, decor, etc. are all welcome. here's some more stuff from charlie's room headed over there...
Img_0002_2 Max
(have i mentioned that i am a huge peter max fan? maybe it's because the first album i ever owned was a beatles album. have i mentioned that i am a huge beatles fan?)

p.s. a shout-out to all you fellow cancers...i had a feeling there were a few of you out there :)

p.s.s. have you guys seen these?!?!? too awesome for words, no?

homebody cancer

Houses
i think the reason i kinda believe in astrology (although some, like my husband, would contend that it is beyond crap) is because i am so true to my sign...cancer. homebody...moody...creative...goofy...ruled by the moon...maternal...lazy...procrastinating...you get the idea. the homebody part is super true. i think maybe that is why i am so drawn to images of houses? a quick glance through my flickr favorites confirms...
barbapapa
from the house + crafts book
this might be my best find yet
teeny-tiny teal house
vintage matchbox
tiny houses
again, you get the idea. do you match your sign? i like looking up signs on wikipedia because it boils everything down to a few descriptive words (appeals to my lazy side).

happy spring! (notice the winter jacket. hmmph.)

monkey monkey

Img_0007
this monkey is a long-overdue gifty for my new niece, dorothy. my sewing machine has been broken for months and i finally got it fixed last week and now i am itching to sew. hopefully there will be more to show here soon...

a week or so ago when i was posting about tattoos, i meant to share some of my favorites from flickr. but i forgot. so here they are...
freshly inked
lowly
don't look mom, it's a new tattoo

that's all i got today. hope you are having a good one!

there is no spring in maine

Img_0003
(i got a pair of these fish trivets a while back but kinda forgot about them. i found them this weekend and realized i hadn't bragged about them yet. and i didn't have a pretty picture for you today so there you go.)

we had a good weekend despite lots of snow and rain and ice and slush and then that really hard snow that turns to ice that you can walk right on top of without your feet falling through which i usually think is pretty cool but right now i am so sick of winter i could spit. i guess the one thing i hate about living here is the absence of spring. otherwise i really love portland. i really really do.

jane finished reading "bridge to terabithia" so we went and saw it yesterday and it was really good! i missed the ending because charlie got really sad when leslie died and i had to go sit out in the hallway with him but what i saw of it i liked and felt it was pretty true to the book. my one medium-sized complaint about the movie was the casting of leslie. in the book, she is well-described (and illustrated) as a really smart, creative, funny, athletic butchy girl. and in the movie she is a really smart, creative, funny, athletic barbie. were there no available talented actresses that age w/athletic bods and short-brown-boy-cuts? hmmmmm...

enough soap-boxing. have a wonderful monday!

p.s. my friend, lisa, posted this "scrubs" clip the other day which is so damn funny and proof-positive that i'm watching the wrong show thursday nights.
