i'm taking a photography class so i can learn about iso and aperture and a whole bunch of other stuff that sounds pretty complicated. i'm messing around with the manual settings a bit. today was a good day to do that - kind of overcast.

these plates are going in the shop soon. (there's some new stuff there today in case you're interested).

hello - just stopping by to say hi. i seem to have lost my blogging mojo and i'm not sure it's coming back. maybe it's just getting used to a new season, new schedule, etc. we'll see.

anyway, september has been great.
and i was going to post a cute picture illustrating that point but f***ing typepad keeps screwing it up.

john was holding charlie on his hip toddler-style the other day and it looked a little ridiculous because charlie is a giant. i pointed out that charlie looked a little like mr. peepers, and the kids were like "who's mr. peepers?" so john and i jumped on the lap-top to show them. i don't know what it says about my maturity level, but i practically cry laughing at mr. peepers. my favorite is the one where he's jumping all over sting, but i couldn't find that clip.

well, hello

here's a pic from picnic. it was such a great event...good location, lots of cool vendors, well-organized, beautiful weather. well done all around.

i'll have some leftovers on etsy soon and for those who were interested in some suitcases, i'll contact you once i get my shite together. not much else going on craft-wise, but i've been keeping busy in other areas...

this summer i decided to tackle some large, intimidating novels. i finished the golden notebook (doris lessing) in july and just finished underworld (don delillo) last night. underworld was amazingly good in an exhausting kind of way.

the whole sarah palin thing is freaking me out. jen sent me this article which says it well. i like this one, too.

john will be away for the better part of a week coming up soon. any good suggestions for some chick flick rentals? sub-titles don't scare me...

that's all i got. fall is good. busy, but good.

soccer mom on the run*

another jane pic because i'm still feeling sappy about her turning 10 and all. she had a birthday party on sunday and i was noticing how the girls walk and giggle together in little preteen packs. frightening stuff.

it's a busy week...birthday party/work/school/swim lessons/soccer/pto/craft fair that i am woefully unprepared for...just adjusting to being back on a schedule. i'm not complaining; i looooooove september. for so many reasons. but if i owe you a phone call or an e-mail or you notice i haven't been coming 'round your blog or flickr spaces lately, that's why.

a lot of the time i feel like i'm still an adolescent just playing grown-up. and i still have lots of immature behavior that supports this: licking icing off a cake plate, laughing at fart jokes, jumping up and down and clapping my hands when i'm excited about something, sneaking a cigarette off the back porch when i've had a few drinks. stuff like that.

every once and a while something happens that makes me feel like a grown-up. arbitrary stuff, like making hotel reservations or sending a sympathy card or taking my daughter to the orthodontist or having her turn TEN.
it feels big.
like decade big.
she's such a grown-up.
for her birthday, she asked us for a tempurpedic pillow, earrings, art supplies and a new fish tank. no toys in there. and she wanted to celebrate by having a date with her dad at her favorite vegetarian restaurant.
crazy big grown-up stuff.

enough sap. happy 10, sweet jane.

all summer in a day

we spent this past sunday cramming in all the stuff on my summer to-do list that we hadn't yet done. we took a ferry out to a nearby island for lunch, took a walk on a jetty out to a lighthouse, hit old orchard beach for some excellent low-brow boardwalk kind of fun. all day i kept thinking of that short story by ray bradbury, "all summer in a day". did you read that? i read it in 5th grade, along with "the veldt". ray bradbury was one creepy individual.

anyway, we are in back-to-school, back-to-work mode. tomorrow is the kids' first day. it's also jane's 10th birthday. there might be a sappy post here soon. you've been warned.
