beyond random

Img_0001
john sent me flowers while he was away last week. they just arrived today and smell so good.

that corner looks so spare and quiet.
here's the the rest of the room...

i've been on an i-tunes kick lately, making playlists, you know, mixing things up, keeping things fresh. i like to have a good workout mix going so i'm always looking for some high-energy-run-up-that-last-hill kind of music. i just downloaded this. (i love the video, too). i'm kinda into david grohl. something about those big teeth.

never-ending search for organization

Img_0002 Img_0004
while painting my front entryway (sometimes called a vestibule, though rarely by me), i decided to rip out the closet pole and shelf (i took out a sizable chunk of plaster, too. oops.). i had visions of a more organized space, which included a small dresser for hats, mittens, scarves, tote bags, etc. and then lots of hooks for all the rest of our stuff. john doesn't love the dresser idea, but he's a good sport.

the shoe organizer you see on the right i got from sundance catalog, it's smaller than i pictured (even though i knew the dimensions). i had a little spinal-tap-stonehenge moment when it arrived. i'm over it.

and yes, i jumped on the "keep calm and carry on" bandwagon. i could not resist.

our downstairs has no closets so this is "it" as far as keeping all our outside junk tidy. okay....we do have a pantry in the back, but that is were i indiscriminately throw crap i don't feel like dealing with. everyone needs a space like that, right? i'll have to take a picture of that for my next installment of "ugly corners". it's impressive.

party pooper

i took the kids to the county fair yesterday. i really don't love fairs (or carnivals, or amusement parks). and not just because they're dirty, and seedy, and crowded, and a little depressing. (i can appreciate the kitsch factor, it's just not for me). a lot of it is my total lack of faith in the frequently assembled and disassembled rickety old rides that raise your kids three stories off the ground and then twirl them around at scary-ass speeds. luckily my kids share my non-thrill-seeking tendencies and for now are happy on the kiddie rides.
Img_0005
i finally brought out one of the lamps i thrifted earlier this year. i have grand plans to make a new shade for it, but i think it looks ok as is for now.
Img_0002_2
and i worked on a train case last night. it felt good to be crafty again.
Img_0004
that's all i got. hope you're having a great tuesday!

greetings from allergy hell

oh, the allergies. i'm an itchy, watery, sneezy, coughing, rubbing-my-eyes, walking zombie these days. bleh.

on a happy note, i am at long last almost done with painting. here's the living room color...
Img_0002
it's kind of a non-color. could be tan. could be gray. john thinks it's a bit purplish. i'm pretty happy with it and glad to almost be done (one more coat and then the entryway and then done). i'm down-to-the-wire for my goal of three rooms painted this summer. it's that damn trim that takes forever...

we were basking in the glow of cable-on-demand while visiting my folks recently, and discovered the hbo series "flight of the conchords". have you seen this? probably you have - i'm always behind on the latest everything. anyway, it is sososo funny. we quickly gobbled up the whole first season and will probably watch it again once it's on dvd. here are some bites...

if you're into it

crazy with the color

Img_0006
i just finished painting the dining room and i'm pretty psyched. this corner cabinet is tricky - when we moved in, it was unpainted, knotty seventies wood which i painted white. which can make it look a bit like a wedding cake depending on the color of the walls so i decided to try something different. a little crazy, but i like it (and see? it matches my dishes...)

i still have one room to go but i'm taking a break to work on some craft stuff i've been itching to do (and some laundry that i need to do. we go through towels like crazy lately).

oh, and we took charlie to see "the simpsons" friday night. so good! i'm a matt groening fan from way back and loyal simpsons viewer (except the years we didn't have a tv and this summer because the kids have gone tv-free (good for them - bad for us 'cause i miss it)). anyway, i challenge you to get this out of your head. (you're welcome)

happy tuesday, everyone!

fresh paint

Img_0008
it's a rainy monday so the lighting is terrible - but i'm happy to say that i love the color of my cabinets. they are a perfect seventies green (think old avocado green appliances). and i'm happily painting away. i should have the kitchen done today - starting on the dining room tomorrow. in between swim lessons and the beach and playdates, etc...

am i boring you? i'm feeling like i'm a bit boring here lately. paint, paint, paint, kids, kids, kids, blah, blah, blah...

here's some fun flickr to break up the monotony.

did you see what jen made me for my birthday? how cool is that?

and check out this awesome canister my other friend, jen, gave me (and not just because i threatened to beat her up and steal it).

happy monday!

where i'm at

Img_0001
this is where i'm at. hopefully finishing prep work (which of course included cleaning out all the cabinets, new shelf paper, etc.) today and actually painting tonight. hopefully i'll have something more interesting to show soon.

other stuff going on this week::

  • finishing some ridiculously-long-overdue swap projects
  • getting my car inspected (a week late)
  • mailing packages
  • getting a ridiculously-long-overdue haircut
  • returning a wildly unflattering bathing suit
  • not losing my patience with charlie
  • sending off a little birthday package to my birthday twin. how is this for freaky - my birthday is 7/7/70 - kara's is 7/7/77 (exactly 7 years apart) and we both went to library school (and have craft blogs). coincidence? well, yes - that's what a coincidence is.** but a pretty freaky one, yes?
  • diggin' my new mugs from sarah...

Img_0003

  • trying not to laugh at yoko's silly summer trim - i think she's feeling vulnerable

Yokoshave
**that little bit is from some stand-up act that john likes to quote a lot. john's mantra is "if it's funny once, it's funny a thousand times." that certainly explains the daily spinal tap references we all enjoy around here.

p.s. crap! i keep forgetting to mention that i have a new blog o' the month - my friend, futuregirl (alice). i love alice because she is very talented and makes really unique things (mostly crotchet + embroidery w/great tutorials). i also love her because she is super snarky and i tend to be pretty snarky and generally like to surround myself with snark. plus, i love the name alice and really wanted to name our second child alice but she was born with a penis so we had to name her charlie instead.

monday

Morning
had a few cups of holy-hell-we-set-our-clocks-forward :: got the kids to school (aidan picked our song of the week, dani california, which was a-ok with me 'cause they are rock-n-roll winners in my book) :: hit target for a few essentials :: went for a run (ok - i walked a little of it) :: did some laundry, cleaned a bit, mailed some stuff, faxed some stuff :: got some really great mail (including one of bethany's amazing pendants that i couldn't get a decent picture of) :: picked up the kids :: watched the kids ride their scooters up and down the road for an hour :: caught up on e-mail, said hello to you (hello!) :: scallops for dinner :: contemplating charlie's upcoming birthday (alien-themed. any ideas?) :: clean-up craft room and do some crafting after kids go to bed

(having another week of god-i've-got-to-get-stuff-done)

p.s. check out mahar drygoods - there's some super cute easter stuff there (including some *cough* pails that *cough* i made)

those other corners

Img_0006_9

Img_0017_3
sometimes, when i'm feeling glass-half-empty-ish, these are the only corners i see. ever feel like that?

here are some much prettier corners. i've been loving everyone's cool craft spaces lately...makes me want to pretty mine up...
mary (cherry tomato)
laurie (liquid paper
amanda (soulemama)
all so purty....
