here's the booty from this year's salvation army fabric sale, color coordinated for your viewing pleasure...

this sale can be a bit overwhelming, what with all the older women shoving you and cutting in line and pretending they are old and feeble and don't know what they're doing (but they're NOT and they DO). i vowed to be less intimidated by them this year (but i was still a little scared).

and if you're a fan of tom waits, you might enjoy this.
that's all i got.
have a great weekend!

uh-oh

a good thrift store opened up nearby.

my friend had told me it was worth a visit and we were driving by just as they were opening this morning so we popped in. it was junkalicious, and really good prices. big boxes full of vintage kids books for 50 cents a piece. my kind of place. if you can get past the nice but slightly skeezy old guys who hang out there and nod toward your daughter and say "her daddy's gonna need to get himself a shotgun when she gets a bit older!"

(for you local folk, the place is called 'timeless treasures' - it's on forest ave next to the odd fellows hall)

they've tired of me

here's one of several sets of shakers i'll be listing on etsy sometime soon. let's say sunday. i love them, i just had too many so i had to make some tough decisions.

here's some stuff...

  • i found this article about pronouncing things wrong on purpose via my friend, liz. john likes to say irregardless as often as possible. i used to think it was funny, when listing things aloud, to change from letters to numbers and i recently realized i got that from paul on "mad about you" and am now making an effort to stop.
  • eshu linked to this editorial today which i thought was definitely worth a read, irregardless of your political slant.
  • the kids and i are tagging along on john's business trip to new york city next week. we've got a good list of places to see, but if there's someplace you think we shouldn't miss, i'd love to hear about it. also, we'll be in midtown manhattan. any kid-friendly food suggestions are welcome.

sunny again today!
sunny=happy. it's just that simple.

drive-by thrifting

i had a couple extra minutes between getting stood up for an appointment and picking up the kids yesterday, so i hit a thrift store real quick. i grabbed a few cute books and a mug. the mug's got a little chip so i think it's headed to my office to keep my pens tidy.

(see my flickr for info on the books)

and i have an embarrassing announcement to make: if you are the erin from canada that won a group of books i was giving away, i have been meaning to e-mail you but lost your e-mail so i'm hoping you might be reading this...i was unable to send your package because it cost $35 to ship that pile of books to canada and i'm too cheap. i'm sorry! and i'm sorry i lost your e-mail! (and i'm sorry i'm too cheap).

ok, then. happy tuesday!

wanty

Img_0003
the tablecloth was a gift from a friend; the tray i picked up at goodwill last week. it reminds me of some flatware i got a while back.

i've been thrift shopping a lot less lately. our tiny house has reached it's limit so i have to be a lot more selective. plus i'm really striving for a less cluttered look around here.

but i'm always window shopping, especially on the new laptop that i might as well carry around in a ginormous fanny-pack since it seems to be permanently attached to my lap. here's some pretty stuff i like that's all so not in our budget...

laptop bag
watch
necklace
boots
pillow
radio
eyeglass case

and i know it's time to take down the christmas banner - it's on my list of things to accomplish this weekend. but since it's still up, here's a last look at some holiday flickr faves...

so cute
so twinkly
so funny
so crazy
so amazing

all righty then.
have a great weekend.

holiday inspiration

i realized last week that i don't have enough forks in my house for thanksgiving dinner so i went to goodwill yesterday. i like these patterns...
Img_0012
and while i was there i found an old craft book, "holiday crafts you can make". here's a few gems...

busy week (obviously). maybe just pictures here or over at flickr.
happy monday!

just some stuff

Img_0009
i had a few spare moments to kill before a class today so i popped into goodwill. once again i've got a color theme going on here. i love the melamine bowls especially. they will be handy for craft fairs (so much easier to pack up than ceramics...)

jen's show was great! the craft fair was a lot of fun! and i'll be updating my shop this week so stay tuned...
happy monday, all!

August 20, 2007

there's a chill in the air...

it feels like fall today, which is by far my favorite season. but i feel like there's a bunch of stuff i still want to cram into summer. i still haven't finished painting, i definitely did not get to the beach enough or grill enough or visit everyone i wanted to visit.

and i haven't hit as many yard sales as usual, but i did hit some with jen this weekend (it's jen's birthday today, btw. happy birthday, jen!!). i didn't find anything spectacular but did pick up this little mug (because i was in need of a mug. hahahahahahahahah).
Img_0002
and we had our neighborhood block party this weekend, which is super fun. my friend betsy came, and brought me this bag, which i love. thanks so much, betsy!
Img_0001
here's some random kid stuff...

jane and friends asked me to make them a good "dance party mix" the other day, and here are the songs jane selected from my i-pod:

rock lobster/b52s :: shake it up/cars :: should i stay or should i go/clash :: salvation/cranberries :: three is the magic number/de la soul :: groove is in the heart/deelite :: macarthur park/donna summer :: i will survive/gloria gaynor :: kids in america/kim wilde :: kung foo fighting/kool + the gang :: melt with you/modern english :: nth degree/morningwood :: sweet caroline/neil diamond :: send me on my way/rusted root :: me + julio down by the school yard/simon + garfunkle :: mr. roboto/styx :: istanbul/they might be giants :: my doorbell/white stripes :: don't go/yaz

i thought that was a pretty kickin' mix.

i took the kids downtown friday night to meet john for dinner and we past some peace demonstrators which led to some questions which led to this exchange...

charlie: where are we fighting a war?
me: iraq
charlie: that's where jack (good friend) is right now!!
me: no, jack is in nantucket.
charlie: oh, right. i always get those two mixed up.

happy monday, everyone!

random bits and pieces

random stuff

  • i was folding laundry today and noticed how utterly bland my wardrobe palette is. can you tell i don't like to draw attention to myself?Img_0003_2
  • i haven't done a whole lot of thrifting this summer. i've been much more into purging and organizing. but i saw this little vintage enamel pot today and had to have it. so cute, no?Img_0002
  • and i haven't been especially crafty this summer, either, making this perhaps the lamest of craft blogs. but i did jump on the beach-mobile-bandwagon (a la blair + jen) and made this with charlie a few weeks ago (truthfully, charlie's interest lasted about 15 minutes, so mostly it was me. but jane + charlie collected a lot of the sea glass).Img_0004

so that's all i got today. hope you are having a super fantastic day!

August 02, 2007

august already?

wow.
august.
kinda snuck up on me.

and august means time for a new blog o' the month. this month it is all about the talented kara from broken press studio. i've chatted about kara here before - she is my birthday twin (who also has a library degree and also has a thing for vintage kids' books). we're like twins somehow. anyway, she makes the coolest stuff, like this handmade book she sent me for my birthday...
Img_0003
and this super cool box she made from a vintage book...
Img_0004_2
and she makes really cute buttons and tote bags like this. everybody needs one of those, right?

so last night some friends were over and i was showing them my loot from my weekly trip to salvation army (1/2 price wednesday) and i pulled out this cute vintage twin set i got and my friend pointed out that it was cashmere (i hadn't even noticed - i just thought it was super soft wool - $1.50!). and then my other friend said "now you're going to blog about it, aren't you?" and i just laughed. but now i have (blogged about it).
